Nationals/Marlins Fight

Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad threw behind Nationals centerfielder/punk Nyjer Morgan for his cheapshot collision with Marlins catcher Brett Hayes last night which resulted in a Grade 1 separated shoulder for Hayes. Gotta love the closeline that 1Bman Gaby Sanchez delivers. Who do you think you are Nyjer Morgan? Leave the ghetto on the playground young man, you're a professional.

  1. Nyjer's from the bay area, and believe it or not...He grew up playing ice hockey. I know, because I played against him. Hell, I even helped teach him to skate as a kid. He made it to the major junior level beofre switching full time to baseball. Watch the collision. He's throwing textbook body checks. Watch after the fight how he raises his arms in the air. Very hockey-like, no? There' a reason for that. He's a hockey player in center field. If he was going to 'cheap shot' the catcher, he would have hit him in the face, or blown out the catcher's knee. He dropped a shoulder right where the catcher has pads. Cheap my ass.

  2. If you want to go hockey on me, it would have been a charging penalty by definition, so textbook nothing.

He definitely hit the catcher higher than necessary. And he would have been safe had he slid. I stand by my cheapshot call.

What's your take on him running into the Cardinals catcher who was not close to being involved in the play on Sunday? I'm sure that was textbook too, right...a textbook two minutes for interference.

  3. in all sports you battle to own the puck/ball/rim/football

morgan is letting him know who owns the plate

volstad thought he'd trade a base for a chance to rifle him, and morgan turned it into a 3bagger (good for him)

  4. Pitchers and hitters battle to "own" the plate during an at bat. A baserunner's job (which Morgan was) is to go safely from base to base...not to "own" the base. That's ridiculous.

I have absolutely no problem with him stealing second and third. But the two collisions with the catchers were uncalled for and cheap.

  5. 1st play with catcher was cheap he was not blocking the plate. 2nd play with catcher was legit. If you dont want to get run down dont block the plate. If he was cheap he would of taken out a knee or gone for the jaw which he did not.

  6. While the bump he delivered against the cardinals was just stupid baseball, the hit on Hayes was clean. If he slid he probably would have been safe, but it was far from a "cheapshot collision." His foot was on the plate and he was turning to tag.
Your post should also mention that Nyjer got his medicine earlier in the game with an intentional beanball. Volstad kept it up, I've got no problem with Nyjer taking his gloves off.

  8. My question to everyone is, Have any of you played baseball before. Stop comparing Hockey/Football/Figure Skating or any other sport to baseball. Have you ever had on catcher's gear, its not like the battle gear football or hockey players wear. Secondly cheap doesn't mean going to the face or knee, cheap can also mean unnecessary, which this play was. I've been on the receiving end of these plays as a catcher and its part of the game. Nyger got is payback with the bean ball the next game. Which should have ended everything right there but no. Nyger had to be a punk and steal 2nd and 3rd in what was at the time a blow out. This resulted in another attempt to teach him a lesson. They didn't hit him this time, just threw a pitch that said "you better knock it off" he charged and got what he deserved.

  9. I don't blame him for taking out the catcher. He shouldn't have though. Like you said the catcher had the ball and was in the process of turning to make a tag. However, if you watch the replay and pause at impact, Nyger's foot was inches away from touching the plate. Absolutely no reason to take the catcher out. Better play would have been to slide. Easily safe at home. It looks cheap because of the previous incident the week prior and him go through the appeal process for throwing a ball at a fan. This guy is a Punk and if he wants to do all the things he's doing on the field and players retaliate to them then he needs to take it. Simple as that. If you can't take it, Don't dish it.

  10. Nyjer Morgan seems to be a baseball/hockey player in the Dale Hunter/Todd Bertuzzi class or lack of.

Hockey player / center fielder, Nyjer Morgan has been suspended for 8 games. What a punk.

  12. Chris Volstad is the punk in the incident. Sure, the hit on the Cards catcher was bush, but Riggleman took care of it by benching him the next day. The hit on the Marlins catcher was clean, but I can see where the Marlins would take offense.

So they hit him the next day, and the deed is done. No, Volstad has to wait until the 4th, when they're up 10 runs. If Volstad's such a man, bean him in the 1st.

So Morgan steals two bases on you in a blowout. Who cares. You want to do something about it, how about throwing him out.

The Marlins have a history of paying too much attention what the other team is doing. It's like they're looking in the other dugout to make sure the other team isn't disrespecting the game. They're a joke!
